Huge explosion at aluminium plant caused by flooding in central China

Dramatic footage from central China reportedly captured the moment an aluminium alloy plant exploded in a giant fireball on Tuesday after severe flooding in the region caused a breach of the factory walls.

In a statement released online, the municipal government of Dengfeng, a city in Henan province, said no casualties or missing persons had been reported as of 10 a.m. local time, following the blast at a local aluminium alloy company owned by Dengfeng Power Group Co. Ltd.

A local resident filmed the moment when massive fireballs exploded from the factory in the distance and turned the sky orange.

Later, the floodwater washed into an alloy tank with a high-temperature solution and caused the explosion, according to an official article posted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Dengfeng City Committee.

About 100,000 people had been evacuated from the city as infrastructure and transportation were impacted by floodwaters averaging 449 millimetres (approximately 1.5 feet), according to local news reports.

Footage released by Zhengzhou Fire Brigade shows overnight rescue efforts from Tuesday into the early morning of Wednesday.
