Increasing number of patients with heat-related illnesses; how to stay safe amid heatwave

폭염으로 벌써 6명 사망…온열질환 3.5명→36명 급증

Nearly the entire nation is under heatwave alerts.
And the number of patients with heat-related illneesses is spiking
For some important tips on staying safe during the sizzling conditions, let's turn to our Kim Bo-kyoung
The summer heatwaves have led to an increasing number of people with heat-related illnesses.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Monday,... from May 20 to July 17,... a total of 4-hundred-36 have suffered from heat-related illnesses... and among them six people have died.
Last week, from July 11 to 17,... there were three reported deaths due to extreme heat,... and the daily number of patients has increased tenfold from an average of 3-point-5 to 36.
One weather expert says the heatwave will last for a while, becoming especially hot from Wednesday.

"Starting Wednesday,... the heat is forecast to worsen as the peninsula is affected by the development of the North Pacific anti-cyclone system."

Though the weather forecast is subject to change,... it is important to know the symptoms of illnesses and how to stay safe from the heat.
Out of 436 reported heat-related illnesses,... the majority were heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Symptoms of heat stroke include the body temperature going higher than 40 degrees Celsius and the skin becoming very hot and dry. The heat can also affect the central nervous system, and even cause people to lose consciousness.
Heat exhaustion is similar to heat strokes, but involves muscle cramps and extreme fatigue.
To prevent such illnesses,... people should drink water frequently even if they are not thirsty, and should stay cool by taking a shower or using hat or parasol to provide shade from the sun.
Taking a rest when it is very hot is important too.

"If you have to work under sizzling heat, you need to cool your body from time to time. Also, sweat causes the body to lose lots of water so hydrating yourself regularly is very important."

If you have to stay outside for a long time during the heatwave, a wet towel around the neck can also help cool down the body.
