Tourism industry faces 'unique vulnerability' as a result of lockdowns

The tourism sector is facing “unique vulnerability” as a result of hard border closures and state-wide lockdowns, according to Tourism and Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond.

“We’ve made it abundantly clear for many, many months now since long before JobKeeper was removed that, from our industry’s perspective, the government needed to make an exception and continue it,” she told Sky News Australia.

Ms Osmond said each time there was a lockdown, it happened to coincide with peak travel times and now tourism operators have “deep fears for what will happen in September”.

“Every time they lock down a border anywhere in the country, we are the first and most affected entity and for some reason we seem to see a confluence between these issues cropping up in the community and school holidays.”
