Ancient Giant
Did human-like giants roam the earth a long time ago and fight serpents just like in Greek Mythology? That’s what a Taiwanese artist wants you to believe. Images of Taiwanese artwork that appeared to be enormous snake fossils were mistakenly shared as being from Thailand. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan issued an article about two large-scale installations by Taiwanese artists, which was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan. The bones of a giant and a serpent, as well as a long tail boat, were shown in the installation. The artwork resembled a construction site. Tu Wei's work is based on a Krabi folktale about two adversaries fighting for a princess.
The artwork received special permission to be shown at the Khao Kanab Nam Caves. The bones of the mammoth, serpent and long-tail boat were among the highlights of the inaugural Thailand Biennale in Krabi. Once the festival concluded in 2019, Thai organizers chose Tu's "Giant cheng's Ruins" and artist collective LuxuryLogico's "Voyage in Time" to be kept on permanent display, signifying deeper relations between the two countries. When people see things they can’t explain, their imaginations run wild and they love to dwell in folklore and tales from the past, hoping the giant and the serpent really existed. Unfortunately, it was a work of art, so the journey to find the giant continues.
Missing Soccer Team
The story enthralled the world: 12 Thai soccer players and their coach were trapped in a flooded cave so far down that rescue seemed nearly impossible. Then, as the rest of the world watched, as did the players' worried families, a daring but challenging strategy was devised to save the members of the Wild Boars team. It would necessitate the participation of competent divers from nations such as Australia, and even then, success was not guaranteed. The lads had to be brought out over several days, and there was no certainty that they would all make it out alive. Graphics and charts depicted how the boys, outfitted in wetsuits and flippers, would swim up and down the perilous subterranean maze to the surface in a buddy system tied to expert divers.
The boys' parents were informed their sons would be swimming to safety, and no one questioned the technique of their rescue in the elation that erupted when the last of the lads surfaced safe and sound. During the rescue, it was revealed that the boys were temporarily sedated to keep them from panicking, but the truth is more complicated. The lads were given significantly more powerful narcotics and were chained behind their backs to prevent them from pulling off their face masks if they awoke. To soothe their fears, the parents were told that the boys were learning to dive and that each of them would be tied to an air hose and then swim out with one rescue diver in front and another behind them. If you ask me, that seems like some crazy stuff.
