The 2021 Zenith Chronomaster Sport looks a lot like a Rolex Daytona, and that’s OK. As a watch that collectors can buy with neither markup nor waiting list, the newest Zenith watch is an excellent option in the $10,000 price range. Among the most discussed new watches of 2021, Zenith’s latest chronograph skirts controversy through its use of multiple Rolex tropes. But peel back the dial and bezel, and this Zenith El Primero succeeds on its own merits. Today, Tim Mosso of WatchBox is proud to present an outstanding preowned example of the most stylish new Zenith Chronomaster since the early 2000s.

There’s no denying that the Zenith Chronomaster Sport looks shockingly similar to the Rolex Daytona 116500LN. Despite their long-ago common use of the original Zenith El Primero chronograph caliber, the Rolex Dayton and Zenith Chronomaster never shared any design DNA. That changed in early 2021 when Zenith skirted controversy by releasing a new Chronomaster dripping with Rolex design cues. From the dial to the bezel to the bracelet and clasp, the new Zenith Chronomaster Sport is as close to the current Cosmograph Daytona as any watch not actually built by Rolex.

In truth, this Zenith El Primero’s design feels roughly 40 percent Geneva and 60 Le Locle. When viewed from head-on, the Chronomaster Sport appears scandalously similar to the Daytona. But the Zenith’s case profile features a full-length bevel, squared off lugs, and pump-style chronograph pushers that are nothing like those of the Rolex. Zenith’s Oyster-like bracelet and clasp design are more distinctly derivative, but they are accessories, not the watch itself.

Internally, the Chronomaster does a better job of distinguishing itself. The dial options copy Rolex’s, but the actual layout uses well-established Zenith cues including tri-color chronograph registers with overlapping scales and a date window at 4:30. The spectacular Striking 10th chronograph system employs a chronograph seconds hand that makes one circuit of the dial every ten seconds. This enables easier reading of fractions of seconds on the black ceramic bezel.

Zenith’s caliber 3600 is, in effect, the El Primero II movement long expected from the Le Locle watchmaker. Compared to the original El Primero, the basic architecture remains with a column wheel, lateral clutch yoke, and a beat rate of 36,000 vibrations per hour. New features include a silicon escapement, an extended 60-hour power reserve, and stop seconds (hacking), a first for a non-Defy Zenith El Primero movement.
