As engineers, we all strive to become experts, however, what if I told you that the Issue with engineering was Expertise.
As engineers, we need some expertise to allow us to undertake engineering design, without it we would not be able to do our jobs. This is the problem with engineering as expertise can prime how we approach a problem and can lead us down the wrong path and miss some critical design issues. This issue comes from a commonly know physiologic effect know as the Florida effect.
So, on one hand, you want to gain expertise but on the other hand, you know that this can cause an issue with your engineering. So what can you do, this is where I would respond you look to science where they have proven over many years to come to the truth despite gaining the knowledge and expertise.
