Tesla Supplier CATL's Best EV Battery Is Here, Cheaper Than Ever

Bloomberg says Tesla supplier CATL now has the best electric car battery and it's cheaper than ever.

CATL, the world’s largest electric car battery manufacturer, unveiled its latest battery in July — a sodium-ion battery.

The Chinese Ministry of Information and IT said earlier this week that it would create standards for sodium-ion cells.

CATL has said it will set up a supply chain for sodium-ion batteries in 2023.

Alternative to lithium-ion batteries CATL's sodium-ion batteries have 160 Wh / kg.

Tesla may one day decide to use sodium-ion batteries once they enter mass production.

Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) , presented the first generation of sodium-ion batteries and the AB battery solution, in which sodium and lithium-ion cells are integrated in one battery pack, at the company's virtual technology conference to combine the advantages of both cell chemistries.

The sodium-ion battery is based on a similar functional principle as the lithium-ion battery. Here, too, sodium ions migrate back and forth between the cathode and anode. However, since these are larger than lithium ions, the demands on the structural stability and the kinetic properties of the materials are higher. This inhibited the industrialization of sodium-ion batteries.

For the cathodes, the company uses Preussisch Weiß with a higher specific capacity and has redesigned the structure of the material by rearranging the electrons. This made it possible to solve the rapid loss of capacity during cyclical charging and discharging.

For the anode, the company has developed a hard carbon material that is characterized by a special porous structure. As a result, sodium ions can be stored on a large scale and transported quickly, and the cycle stability is also excellent, as the company emphasizes.

The energy density of the sodium ion battery cell from CATL can reach up to 160 Wh / kg. The development target for the next generation is over 200 Wh / kg, i.e. in the range of today's lithium-ion batteries. At room temperature, the new sodium-ion cell can be charged to 80 percent in 15 minutes. In addition, it can maintain its capacity to more than 90 percent at an ambient temperature of –20 ° C. According to CATL, the thermal stability of sodium-ion batteries exceeds the national safety requirements for traction batteries.

The first generation of sodium-ion batteries can be used in various scenarios in the electrification of transport, especially in regions with very low temperatures. In addition, it should be adaptable to the application needs of various scenarios in the field of energy storage.

In the field of battery systems, CATL has developed the AB system solution, in which sodium and lithium-ion batteries are combined in a specific ratio in one battery pack. The various battery systems are controlled by a special algorithm in the battery management system. This system solution can compensate for the current weak point of the sodium ion cells in terms of energy density and at the same time use their advantages in terms of high power and performance at low temperatures.
