That fateful night started off as usual - there was no sign of trouble. The mother was cooking dinner, and little Mary was busy playing with dolls in her bedroom.
Once in a while the girl would ask when her father was coming home from work. Mrs. Collins would smile and reply sweetly, urging her daughter to be patient.
“Please don’t be a little chatterbox… You Dad will be home as soon as he can. You know he needs to work to earn money,” said the woman, desperately trying to keep her voice calm.
But when her husband didn’t come home on time, Mrs. Collins felt an inexplicable attack of anxiety.
