Tackling climate change in fragile states and protracted crisis situations

This IIED Debates event on Monday, 18 October, organised by the International institute for Enviroment and Development (IIED), explored the role humanitarian agencies can play in tackling climate change in protracted crisis situations.

An expert panel of grassroots activists, humanitarian organisations and expert researchers discussed the challenges that climate change poses for vulnerable people in fragile states and protracted crises.

The speakers debated how humanitarian agencies – both international and local – can tackle the intensifying risks posed by climate change in these contexts. They were:

*(7:50) Degan Ali, internationally-renowned humanitarian leader and organisational development consultant and the executive director of Adeso
*(17:02) Abdurahman Sharif, senior director of partnerships and outreach – Europe at Internews and former director of Somalia NGO Consortium
*(27:26) Professor Clionadh Raleigh, professor of human geography, University of Sussex
*(36:28) Paul Knox-Clarke, principal of PREPARE, an initiative to improve the readiness of humanitarians
*(44:59) Dr Catherine-Lune Grayson, policy advisor at the International Committee of the Red Cross
*(51:27) Caroline Voûte, health policy advisor in the programmes unit of Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) UK.

The moderator was Simon Addison, principal researcher and team leader (public policy for climate resilient development) in IIED's Climate Change research group
