Clumps of toxic foam covering India’s holiest rivers, the Yamuna, did not keep Hindu devotees from bathing in the river on November 9, 2021, to mark Chhath Puja – a four-day festival dedicated to the sun god, Surya. Local activists blame the heavy pollution on illegal dumping of industrial waste and untreated sewage. A 2020 report by the Indian government found the river’s water quality had grown “critically worse” and pledged to clean the sacred river. However, toxic white foam floating on the Yamuna remains a yearly phenomenon.
