
During the Budget debate on March 1, Manpower Minister Tan See Leng also rejected the Workers' Party's alternative suggestions to raising revenue. WP's Jamus Lim had proposed that the government raise corporate, wealth, and sin taxes to avoid raising the GST. Dr Tan said the progressive tax structure laid out by the government is designed to be fair but not punitive. He added that the WP's approach will result in the middle income having to pay more down the line. However, the WP said its suggestions are simply to seek alternatives to spread out sources of revenue.
