An investigation has been launched into the “unacceptable conduct” of a Russian junior karting star after he was filmed appearing to do a Nazi salute upon winning a race.

Artem Severiukhin, 15, also burst out laughing after performing what looked like the gesture following the opening round of Karting European Championship in Portugal on Sunday.
FIA ARE INVESTIGATING ‘UNACCEPTABLE CONDUCT’ OF RUSSIAN KART RACER
Posted on April 11, 2022 | by Hannah Prydderch
The FIA has begun an investigation into a Russian karting driver who performed what appeared to be a Nazi salute on the podium during a karting race in Portugal yesterday.

In a clip shared across social media, Artem Severiukhin was seen tapping his chest twice and shooting his right arm out before laughing, having just won the opening race of FIA-sanctioned European Karting Championship,

The 15-year-old is currently competing with an Italian licence after the FIA banned all Russian and Belarussian drivers from racing under their national flag following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As a result of the incident, the FIA have released a statement confirming they’ve “launched an immediate investigation into the unacceptable conduct” of Severiukhin.

His seat and contract with the Ward Racing team is being terminated as well.

In a statement posted on social media, the team said they were “deeply in shame of the pilot’s behaviour, which it condemns in the strongest possible terms”.

“Ward Racing would like to apologize to those who were hurt or distressed by the occurrence. It has long been and will remain a priority for Ward Racing to work for a more diverse, inclusive, and respectful racing climate.”

In response, the Russian Automobile Federation’s press officer Maria Melnikova released a video of Severiukhin, in which he said he “would like to apologise to everybody for what happened yesterday at the European Karting Championship.

“While stood on the podium, I made a gesture that many perceive as a Nazi salute. That was not the case. I have never supported Nazism and see it as one of the most abhorrent crimes against humanity.

“I was racing under the Italian license, won the race under the Italian flag, and guys below the podium were showing to me that in Italy in such cases it’s customary to beat your chest, around where the heart is, expressing gratitude. I just wanted to do that gesture. How all the rest happened, I cannot explain.

“I know I’m guilty, know I’m stupid, and am ready to suffer the consequences. I ask to be understood in that there was no support for Nazism or fascism, no desire to insult the spectators, the drivers, the fans, the team, and the viewers of the broadcast. Please forgive me.”
