The poor state of security in Nigeria has reinforced the need for structural changes to make the police more effective since it is primarily incharge of internal security. While experts agree that the police and other security forces in Nigeria are very crucial in addressing insecurity, they say it is important for a reorientation to take place among police personnel. This cry for a paradigm shift gave birth to the Presidential Roadmap on Police Reforms, introduced by the federal government. A Police bill worked on and passed by the national assembly now put in place reform initiatives. But since the uprising against the high-handedness of the police by young Nigerians in 2020 through the EndSARS protest, only piecemeal reforms have been implemented including the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the police, recruitment of more policemen and improved welfare for officers and rank and file. Another issue plaguing the force is the current face off with the Police Service Commission over the recruitment of 10,000 police constables. The Nigeria Police Force says the advert for recruitment has no connection with the Nigeria Police Force and is not in tandem with the police recruitment process. Now Nigerians are asking which body is actually empowered by law to carry out a recruitment process into the police force? How can the Police be fully reformed? Retired Assistant General of Police, Wilson Inalegwu. and the Commissioner in charge of Human Rights in the Police Service Commission, Rommy Mom speak on how Police can be fully reformed.
