The Hippocratic Oath requires doctors to do no harm, but, historically, this rule hasn’t always been followed. From haphazard brain hacking to chainsaws in childbirth, the road to modern medicine has not exactly been a smooth one. Yet despite all this quackery, some of the oldest ideas in medical history are still used in healthcare today. Blood-sucking leeches, poo transplants and drilling holes in people’s skulls may all sound like ancient folk remedies, but believe it or not these shocking treatments are still being practised in hospitals to this very day.
